The ART 2000 Millennium Project
The Creative Peace Mural Society is an extension of the ART 2000 Millennium project. In celebration of the new millennium two textile murals were produced in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and Ballymena, Northern Ireland and displayed in an exhibition at the United Nations in New York in February, 2001.

Overall Image of the Mural
The outside border of the mural is made up of hand prints using acrylic paint on fabric. They represent the people in the community and vary in size from young children’s to adults’. The central panel portrays the landscape of the country through the history, geography and culture of the region. This section is designed by the local community. The narrow border between the two areas is decorated using the language of the country.

Victoria, B.C. Canada
The first mural was completed in Victoria, B.C. Canada, in May 2000 with the participation of students from twenty different schools across the Greater Victoria School District 61.

Under the guidance of international textile artist Carole Sabiston, the youth came together during a series of workshops to design and create their mural showing the geography, history, and culture of their region of Canada.

The mural was presented at a public celebration event held at the University of Victoria. Since then, it has been displayed internationally in Northern Ireland and at the United Nations in New York.

Ballymena N. Ireland
The second mural was created in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, in June of 2000. Youth and other people, representing a cross section of the local community, worked with textile artist
Carole Sabiston to create the Northern Ireland mural at a series of workshops held in the local town hall. Upon completion, the mural was officially unveiled in the town hall at a formal civic reception and celebration. The Ballymena and Victoria murals were then exhibited at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland, before going to the United Nations in New York City. The Northern Ireland mural will be on permanent display at the new Ballymena Town Hall.

United Nations in New York
In response to an invitation from the United Nations, the Victoria and Ballymena murals were displayed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York during February 2001. Young people from both Victoria and Ballymena attended the opening of this event. The Canadian Consulate hosted a reception to honour the exhibition and to recognize the young people who had participated in both projects.

Mex, Valais, Switzerland
In March 2005, the third mural was designed and created in the village of Mex, Canton Valais, Switzerland. The whole community enthusiastically embraced the concept and worked with the Creative Peace Mural’s creative team to produce a mural that depicted the local culture, values and way of life.

The celebration to mark the completion of the mural included the local school choir,
Alphorn Players and a feast of local cheese, wine and breads. The impact of the project on the local community is amply illustrated by the recognition given by Mrs. Madeline Heiniger, President of Mex, and also from the Canadian Consul in Switzerland.
